My Kitchen Remodeling

This kitchen remodeling project came about as my kitchen was old and tired having been installed some 25 years ago. I was contemplating the work needed when my daughter decided to have her kitchen remodelled and offered me the chance to re-use her kitchen units, which were only 6 years old and in very good condition. I jumped at the chance to have my kitchen remodeling done reasonably cheaply. So I hired a box van one weekend and collected her kitchen units. The work of kitchen remodeling progressed over the next month or so.

               • Empty existing kitchen units

               • Remove all doors and drawers (Posidriv 2 pt screwdriver)

               • Remove the wall cupboards
(Stepladder, large flat bladed screwdriver HSS drill bit with
power drill to drill out stubborn screws, wear safety
                     goggles).

               • The kitchen floor was uneven and needed levelling,
as I don’t have the tools or the skill necessary to do such
work it was contracted out to a specialist floor layer
(Get 3 quotes before allocating the work)

                • The day before the floor layer was due to arrive the kitchen
units and worktops were removed. The kitchen sink was
also removed. To do this it is necessary to turn off the hot
and cold water supplies at the outlet to the cistern, and
using the appropriate tools disconnect the taps
(Tap spanner or 2 large adjustable spanners, if flexible
fitting have been used to connect the taps to the pipes).

The pipes then need to be fitted with 15mm stop end
                     compression fittings (Plumber’s merchant, B & Q or
similar). The water can then be turned on at the cistern.

                 • Once the floor had been levelled the central heating boiler
and hot water cylinder were replaced. An Accredited
Contractor (A legal requirement in the UK) did this.

The sink unit could then be replaced on a temporary basis.

                 • Now for the kitchen lighting, I chose 5 down-lighters and a
                   central array of 3 spot lights (B & Q) on 2 circuits,
controlled by double dimmer switches. The existing light
fittings were removed (Isolate at Fuse-board), holes were
                   cut for the down-lighters
(Stepladder, hole cutter, power drill, safety goggles and dust
                    mask).

                 • Ceiling painted with 2 coats of Dulux Colourflex rich matt
                    “Timeless”
(stepladder, paint tray and paint roller).

                  • Electrician installs cables and kitchen lighting.Left Wall Kitchen Makeover (Remodeling) Project

                     doorframes and
                     skirting boards

                     (fine sandpaper ,
                       2 inch & ½ inch
                       paintbrushes,
                       paintbrush
                      cleaner)

                 • Imperfections in walls filled with “Polyfiller” fine surface
filler, then areas of wall not covered by units or tiles painted
with 2 coats of Polycell base coat emulsion followed by 2
coats of Dulux “straw” matt emulsion
(Allowing drying times between each coat).

                • Tile floor
(330mm floor tiles, large tile cutter, waterproof adhesive,
                       spreader).

                • Tile end walls
(Wall tiles, adhesive, spreader, spirit level, edging strip)

                • Install wall units
(Masonry bit, power drill, wallplugs stepladder, long spirit
                       level, 2nd person, safety goggles).

                • Install floor units
(Spirit level, spanner to adjust feet, screws and
                       screwdriver)

                • Fit doors and shelves to kitchen units (Screwdriver)

                • Modify and fit worktops
(Chisels, mallet, 22 inch saw, work-bench, screws and
                        screwdriver).

                • Tile walls above worktops and behind cooker.

                • Replace washing machine

                • Replace cooker
