If you want to re-furbish or replace your kitchen cabinets there are a number of things to consider if the project is going to be a success.

Do you have enough money in your budget? Consider carefully and realistically how much you want to spend on the kitchen cabinets. This is a vital first step as some ranges of kitchen cabinets can cost tens of thousands of pounds. Be careful not to over commit yourself by borrowing to pay for the kitchen cabinets.

Choose the style you want, this can be daunting, as there are literally hundreds of kitchen cabinet manufacturers and suppliers, each with their own ranges and styles. If you have an Internet connection I suggest that you do a search for kitchen cabinets to see what is available. It is, then, worth spending time to visit 2 or 3 showrooms to see the kitchen cabinets in situ. This will let you assess the build quality, the standard of fittings and what accessories are available.

Now is the time to specify the construction of your kitchen cabinets. The most expensive and best quality are all wood frames with wooden door and drawer fronts. If the kitchen cabinets have a painted finish then they will probably be made of pine or plywood. Otherwise you have a choice of woods such as oak, beech walnut or cherry. However, varnished pine is quite attractive.

A slightly less expensive option is to buy kitchen cabinets with the frames made from fibreboard (MDF or HDF) with laminate facings. As before the door and drawer fronts can be made with real wood. Alternatively the kitchen cabinets can be constructed totally from laminated fibreboard. This gives the manufacturer the means to create a large range of styles.

It is important to check the quality of the drawers and their runners. Things to avoid are plastic drawer frames with a hardboard base; these will fall apart given moderate usage. You need a solid base mounted in a wooden or extruded aluminium frame with ball bearing mounted sliding rails.

The kitchen cabinets should have adjustable legs to avoid the use of shims if the floor is uneven. A matching toe board might be useful here.

There are a number of ways to proceed with the installation of the kitchen cabinets. Most of the major suppliers will have an installation service available. This may be free if you spend more than a certain amount. If you use this service, there is usually a full guarantee offered.

You could use an independent contractor, or if you have the time, necessary tools and skills you could do the installation of the kitchen cabinets yourself. In either case you will have to arrange for delivery and there would be no guarantees from the supplier.

Kitchen cabinets come with a wide range of accessories such as wine racks, rotating shelving for corner units, cutlery trays, towel rails, internal waste bins and many more. As well as the accessories you will need worktops, wall cupboards, sink with taps (drainage) and appliances.

It is well worthwhile to use the excellent design and fitting services offered by the major Kitchen cabinet suppliers.
